Emmet Fox says, “It matters not what the thing may be that is standing between us and our true contact with God—it must go.”
- Sermon On The Mount, p.65
Well, in my experience, it does matter because (in my experience) there is nothing that can ever stand between me and my true contact with God, there is only the belief that there is something standing between me and my true contact with God. That is the only thing that needs to go, and only if I want to experience true contact with God, which I don’t need unless I’m experiencing it.
So if I think anything is standing between me and God, that’s all that’s happening: I’m just thinking it. And I’m mistaken. I can question the thought.
If I think it’s my job, I’m mistaken. The problem is not that my job is cutting me off from God, it’s that I think my job is cutting me off from God. I am cutting myself off from God - in my thoughts.
If I think it’s my significant other, I’m mistaken.
If I think it’s my parents, I’m mistaken.
If I think it’s certain music, I’m mistaken.
If I think it’s money, I’m mistaken.
If I think it’s Instagram, I’m mistaken.
If I think it’s Fox News, I’m mistaken.
If I think it’s fundamentalism, I’m mistaken.
If I think it’s other people’s hatred, I’m mistaken.
Not one of those things needs to be cut out in order for me to have true contact with God.
God is Reality.
I can never be out of contact with God except in my mind - when I’m thinking and believing something other than “what is.”
When I am unable to believe thoughts of separation, I remain connected to God ...in my thoughts.
Because, whether or not I’m connected to God in my thoughts, I am always connected to God in truth because it is impossible to be disconnected from “what is.”
